We Professionals Are In A Tight Spot These Days!

Let me ask you a question:  what is your biggest struggle in your professional life?  

I have asked this enough with lots of professionals to know that there are two answers:  1)  Not enough clients,  or 2)  Not enough time.  These are the perenial responses when I talk to groups of professionals.  Sometimes, we struggle to keep the "pipeline" full.  Other times, the pipeline overwhelms us.

Problem is,  there is an end-game to this.  You only have so much time, and there are only so many clients  knocking on your door.  But the bills keep coming in.  

Every study of professionals -- doctors, attorneys, therapists, accountants, consultants, coaches, you name it -- shows the same thing:  we are working harder and harder for less and less.  People are finding solutions elsewhere for some professions.  For attorneys, it is that and a glutted market.  For those in healthcare, managed care is eating us alive!

One doctor recently told me that she worked Monday through Thursday for everyone else in her office (and for the office itself).  Finally, sometime mid-morning, she started making money that would come to her.  She is really an hourly worker!  She owns the practice, but has to work all week to keep everyone else going.

I don't have to tell you:  Professionals are in a tough spot.  Our business is, most often, US!  We are our own product.  That means a)  we are limited by the hours we can work, and b)  we are constantly selling ourselves to find the clients we want.

There are 24 hours in everyone's day, 7 days in everyone's week, and 52 weeks in everyone's year.  So, take out your time to sleep, eat, and take care of staying alive.  That leaves you with your potential work hours.  Now I don't know about you, but I have a limit to my daily usefulness.  If I work enough in a day, my last clients of the day often get the "leftovers" of me.

One day, about 10 years ago, it struck me:  if I wanted to make more money, I only had two choices, 1)  raise me fees, or 2)  work more hours.

In his excellent book, The E-Myth, Michael Gerber makes a distinction between working IN your business and working ON your business.  He tells entrepreneurs that they should be very careful about daily work in the business (think about the owner of a car lot out selling cars all day).  Instead, they should be working on the business (that same owner finding better ways to attract customers, develop the salesman, etc.).

The Professional's Problem

But professionals have a problem.  We are, by definition, IN the business (by the way, did they tell you during your professional training that you were in business?).  I coined a term for what professionals must become:  Pro-preneurs.  This is a hybrid between being an entrepreneur and a professional.

We have to find a way to work IN the business AND work ON the business.  Let's be honest:  which one suffers?  Unfortunately, we lose track of what could be because we are caught up in the day-to-day client needs.  At some point, we either step back and work ON the business or we slowly get behind until our practice literally falls apart.

In today's hypercompetitive marketplace, you have to set yourself apart.  You really have to find a way to stand out from the pack.  Really, you have to become the established "expert" in your field, whatever it is.  When you do that, there is suddenly no shortage of clients!

Are you familiar with Robert Kiyosaki?  He wrote the best-selling book, Rich Dad Poor Dad.  He observed that the only true way to wealth is by building a business.  Working in a business will never cut it.  Unless we have something that is working for us, we all will be constantly working just to keep up.

Professionals are in no different boat than all the other workers in this society.  We get paid by the hour, even if some get paid well, it is still by the hour.  And that is true, even if you own your practice!

Kiyosaki points out, we are "one skill away from great wealth!"  That skill is building a business that does not require your involvement every minute of every day.  To do that, you have to stretch your mind!  You have to "shift your paradigm, " or "think outside the box," or whatever "change" mindset you wish to call it.  You have to grow, see possibilities.

Do What You Love, More Effectively and More Profitably!

Here's the catch:  whatever profession you are in, you are there because you likely love to be involved in that world.  You may love to provide medical care, legal advice, accounting advice, life advice, psychological advice, whatever!  So I am not suggesting you leave that behind.  I am suggesting you catapult that into greater effectiveness.

In their excellent book, The Obvious Expert, Elsom and Mark Eldridge say “writing a book is not only the best way, it is the indisputably essential way, to establish your credibility in your field of expertise.”   

"Write a book," they say!  You already know the story:  in order to get the respect you deserve in your field, you need to write a book.  And you have probably heard the same statistics I have:  for every book published, thousands of manuscripts sit in the slush pile.  

Even if you make it past that pile, some editor in an office far from you gets to decide what your book will be about.  In fact, a good friend of mine found his book to be entirely different than the one he wrote!

Oh, and then there are those other statistics:  the typical first run of a new author is 5,000 copies.  The vast majority of books written never sell through the original printing.  Given that, few advances are beyond the $2,000 to $3,000 range.  “It ain’t a pretty picture,” as my aunt used to say!

Does that make you feel a lack of control?  Does that overwhelm you to think about all the “blood, sweat and tears” of writing?  It did me.  I have to admit it:  I have a real “love/hate” relationship with writing.  I do it because I know I should, and once I start, I enjoy it.  But the getting started. . . that’s the tough part.  Then, to imagine all that work sitting in a pile beside the editor’s desk. . . . There Has To Be An Alternative!

And there is.  You could self-publish.  Many people have great success with this.  It pretty much turns that whole “advance” dream upside down, and you get to deal with all those books you just bought.  Imagine boxes of books in your garage, waiting for YOU to go out and sell them!

Instead of creating something that works for you, you become a slave to your own creation.  Few self-published books sell on their own.  They require you to "get out there and sell 'em."  And we have already established that time is an issue.

There IS An Alternative To The Publishing Game,
One That Puts YOU In Control!

Or, you can join the digital age and do an ebook.  If you have missed all they hype, ebooks are simply electronic documents.  They come in lots of formats, but they are basically computer documents.  Since that doesn't grab people's fancy, we call them "ebooks."  That ties into something people already understand.  It really is a mental anchor.

I have had lots of people tell me that ebooks aren't going anywhere, that they are useless.  Tell that to Seth Godin!  Back in 2001, he wrote an excellent book, The Idea Virus.  When he first released it, he released the book as a free ebook.  Anyone could download it and read it.  In fact, it was downloaded hundreds of thousands of times.  

Many in the publishing industry believed Seth had just made his book a flop by giving it away.  But when it came out in hardback, it was almost instantly a bestseller!  He used the ebook to propel his printed book to the top.  Then he used that to propel himself to the top of the consulting world.  He is a rich, well-respected, in-demand person because of that ebook!

There are many people who believe that the ebook is the wave of the future.  Sony and Amazon have both introduced ebook readers that are trying to capture the hand feel of a book.  The publishing industry is scared to death of the ebook.

Currently, there are few clear statistics about the future of ebooks, but even the numbers that people are throwing around (some saying $10 billion in the next few years), they are missing the story of the ebooks that are all over the internet giving excellent information RIGHT NOW, completely BYPASSING traditional publishers, and getting to the public DIRECTLY.

Let me tell you a story.  Back in 2000, I was busy writing my book.  Every day, as I was writing, I was imagining that editor sending me the rejection notice (I know better, but that’s just what our minds do!), but I just kept “plugging away.”  You see, I had information that I thought was helpful for people in troubled relationships.  I had a “mission” to get that information out.

Then, I had a chance encounter with someone who sold an ebook.  He was selling LOTS of copies and making a great deal of money. . . and he hadn’t even written the book!  No publishers, no inventory, and he had made the process automatic.  I was, to say the least, intrigued.  He and I had many phone conversations where I picked his brain.  Then I found a few others that were doing similar things.  I picked their brains.  And I wrote.

Finally, in December 2001, right at Christmas, I finished the simple little website I built myself.  I turned the site on just before we left for a Christmas family visit.  We drove 8 hours to our relatives.  The whole way, I was holding my breath, wondering whether I had just wasted my time. When we arrived, I logged onto the internet with my laptop (Remember dial-up?  I had a telephone cord stretching across my in-law’s kitchen!).  After a few minutes of waiting for the internet connection, waiting for the email to download, and wading through other messages, I let out a huge breath!  Ten copies of my ebook had already sold!

Fast forward to today.  I have now sold almost 45,000 copies of that ebook.  Then, last year, I rewrote that same ebook for a slightly different niche (added some material, deleted some material, but only spent about a month of off-and-on editing).  That ebook has sold close to 5,000 copies.  Those numbers don’t represent the additional income from selling other people’s ebooks to my customers.  Oh, and I took my information, turned it into an online seminar, sold that seminar out, recorded it, and now I sell that as an “upsell” to those who purchase my ebook.

That is why I am here.  That event, creating an ebook, literally changed my life and the life of my family!  And I know it can change your life, too!  I no longer go looking for clients.  They come to me, and pay me over twice what I was making seeing the same clients before I “became an expert!”  I put that in quotations, because nothing about my approach changed.  Everything changed in how people perceived me.

"Only Internet Marketers Use Ebooks!" -- WRONG!

“An ebook,” you say, “is only good for those internet marketing people.”  You would be, for the most part, entirely wrong!  Yes, internet marketers have led the way on digital products.  But many people around the country are building incomes and careers off ebooks.  

For example, in the last 6 years, I have been “flying under the radar,” earning a six-figure income from my ebooks, related sales, and coaching I provide to my customers.  I don’t sell an internet marketing product.  I sell a book about marriage and relationships.

That would be my "ebook cover" (I'll tell you why that image is so important during the bootcamp) just to the right.  

Now, I work at Starbuck’s (see my picture above) and a couple of other coffee shops, or just sitting at my kitchen table.  I take calls from wherever I happen to be, and mostly work my schedule around what I want my life to be.  You can do the same!

Oh, I still go to an office, still have a small direct practice.  And I sit at staff meeting watching a group of 8 other professionals who believe they are stuck living with the limitations of a professional practice that we have already named:  hours/time and clients  They are stuck in a dead-end thought process!.

Don't Be Fooled:  Time IS NOT Money -- It's Your Life!

In the process, I realized something:  my colleagues had been playing the “time is money” tape.  I had played the same tape.  But what I realized was this is false.  Time is NOT money.  Time, when it is gone, is gone.  Money, I can make more of.  If I lose money, I can  build back up.  And money is, in essence, limitless.  I can make more and more of it.

Time is not.  When I “spend” my time doing something, I am taking it away from something else.  It is not renewable.  It is gone forever!  So, if I spend my time working, I can’t spend it with my family, on hobbies, or helping the world in other ways.  That time is gone forever, and I can’t manufacture more of it.  That’s a tough one for those of us who are professionals, rewarded for the hours we put in!  Time is LIFE!

What If You Could Attract Clients And Create An Income Stream?

You see, the reach of an ebook is, well, worldwide!  If you were to beat the odds and got a book published, in the first and potentially only print, it may touch 5,000 people.  But they would likely be in your home country only.  Not only that, but many statisticians say that 90% of books bought ARE NEVER READ!  Then, there is my nightmare:  finding my book in the dollar bin at the book store.

Compare that with my situation.  My ebook sells all around the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  I wake up in the morning to see my ebook having been bought on the other side of the world while I slept.  My current customer list includes:  a couple in Hawaii, 1 in Dubai, 4 in the UK, a couple of ex-pats scattered in odd places, and then people all over the US.  All found me through my ebook on the internet.  And all pay top dollar for me to help them.  I am still doing what I was doing.  Only now, I am better compensated.

I have included a screen shot of a 2 week daily record of my sales through Clickbank, the company I use to process my payments (I don't even have to deal with processing payments!
